Acrostic

Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne:

H err Liszt, is Bruno’s teacher, who would come to their house for school. Because Out With was so out of touch with any real civilization, they had a teacher who would come and teach them at their house. Bruno was not a big fan of him because he limited Bruno’s creativity.

Out with is the concentration camp, which was in reach of Bruno. Bruno didn’t know it was a concentration camp at the time. He went there multiple times because he had made his only friend, Shmeul, there. Although there were barbed-wire fences all around the camp, Bruno enjoyed talking with his new companion, and occasionally, Bruno would bring Shmuel food.

Loveable Bruno died in the concentration camp, in search of Shmuel’s father. After Shmuel’s father went “missing”, Bruno squeezed under the gate, and changed into a pair of clothes that Shmuel had provided. Bruno was in it for the adventure, but after being in the camp for a few seconds, Bruno felt the urge to leave. Being a good friend, Bruno decided to stay with Shmuel to search for Shmuel’s father. Before he had finished the search, the soldiers ordered a march. Bruno and Shmuel were quickly placed in the middle of all of the chaos. When they went into the gas chamber, but Bruno had assumed that they were just getting out of the rain. Before he knew it, they both died a sad death.

Over worked, doesn’t even cover what the Prisoners had to go through. For example, Pavel was forced into peeling potatoes, instead of being a doctor, which he was before he was taken to the camp. Shmeul was parted from his family, and to add to that, he wasn’t feed enough.

Carefully, Pavel tried to pour wine for Lieutenant Kotler. He missed the wine glass and accidently spilled it unto the lap of the Lieutenant. “What happened then was both unexpected and extremely unpleasant. Lieutenant Koler grew very angry with Pavel and no one- not Bruno, Not Gretel, not mother and not even Father – stepped in to stop him doing what he did next, even though none of them could watch, even though it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale (148)”. The lieutenant beat Pavel, which is heartbreaking because Pavel’s character is exceptionally innocent. Later that night, Bruno realized what a horrible man the Lieutenant was, but most of all, he noticed the fact that his father didn’t stop it from happening.

Ardent feelings were portrayed in this novel. For Bruno, it was the feeling of friendship. For his father, it was the feeling of defeat. For his mother, it was the feeling of remorse, for the people who were being tortured only minutes away. Last, Shmeul was feeling lonely and disconnected from the real world.

Unfortunate Shmuel was in the camp, staving for months. The only thing that he had left was his family, who all disappeared though out time. If it weren’t for Bruno, Shmeul wouldn’t even have anything to look forward to. Thanks to Bruno, Shmuel was provided with food and friendship.

Smells of the dead bodies went into the air. Bruno’s mother didn’t realize what the smell was until Lieutenant Koler accidently informed her. This is the beginning of the rocky relationship between Bruno’s parents. A bit later, She decides that it would be best if her and her children were to move away from the camp. Although, before that could happen, it was too late for Bruno, because before they left, he was gassed.

Time was of the essence to Bruno. When he first moved to Out With, he was counting the days until he was able to go home. As time passed, Bruno became less focused on counting time and enjoyed his new life there. It also played a big part in Shmuel’s life as well. He only had weeks before he was to die from one thing to another.
