Setting

The story begins as Ashoke and Ashima leave Calcutta, India and settle in Central Square, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Ganguli family lives in suburbs for most of their lifetime, until Gogol moves to the big city to follow his dream and meet the love(s) of his life. Gogol’s father also goes to Ohio, where he eventually dies of heart complications, to work for a college. The setting of the story (in the suburbs) may seem insignificant, but it actually was very important. By growing up in a close-knit society of mainly other Bengali families, Gogol and his little sister were not exposed to much of the outside world. I would consider living in this setting, mainly because I am close to it in retrospect now. Medium sized society in a quiet neighborhood and private school. I wouldn’t really change where I live, because I enjoy my current setting and I believe it is a good place to grow up. If the story had taken place back in India, Gogol’s life/name/friends/education would be completely different.

top 10 character list for Ravens Gate

The following list will be ten characters from the book placed from least (10) to favorite (1) each will have a brief explanation of why or why not I liked the character.

10. Gwenda Davis: She is Matt’s aunt and guardian who takes care of Matt and her boyfriend. Her attitude annoys me because it always seems like she does everything to her own benefit. She takes care of Matt and everything but she doesn’t really care for him at all.

9. Kelvin: this is Matt’s “friend” that talks him into steeling DVDs from a warehouse. After tripping the alarm and being caught by the security guard, Kelvin does the only thing he can do and stabs the security guard then was caught by the police. If Kelvin hadn’t done this, Matt would not have been but in the position to die from Ms. Deverill.

8. Miss Creevy: She makes me think of a hag looking person with the giant hairy mole on the side of her chin. She gives me the feeling of a typical witch and I strongly dislike her because she is so mysterious and seems so innocent.

7. Mrs. Deverills cat: This cat is very sneaky and follows Matt and Tom Burgess into a forest and is later killed. The creepiest thing about this cat is that the next day the cat showed up alive again and ready to kill.

6. Mrs. Deverill: She is the one who took Matt into her care for the LEAF project. She seems like a completely friendly person but then again she is the one who plotted the overall scheme.

5. Steven Mallory: He is the one who set Matt up with the leaf project. I like him because he was very nice to Matt and died trying to save him.

4. Tom Burgess: He met up with Matt in the forest and gave him a medallion that would allow Matt to see his way without it being obscured by the magic. He offers to help Matt escape but when Matt arrived at his house the next morning he was dead.

3. Matt: He of course is the main character and goes through a lot during the story. He is not number one only because he has a sour attitude sometimes and seems to do whatever he wants his way. Either way he is a good character and is one to be liked.

2. Sanjay Dravid: One of the coolest characters in the story, he is part of the Nexus which is a secret organization. He finds Matt on an internet IM chat box and meets with him later in the story. Unfortunately him just like every other character that helps him in the story dies.

1. Richard Cole: the very best character in the story. Starts out as a newspaper journalist for the city of Greater Malling. He meets Matt and is completely aghast by his story. Although he thinks it is completely made up he goes along with Matt and ends up helping him escape. After being caught in the Natural History Museum with a bunch of rogue skeleton dinosaurs, Matt fears the worst but in the end he was able to escape and he saves Matt.

Setting for Ravens Gate

The setting in Ravens gate played a very important part in the story. The story took place in the country during April and May. The author did a very thorough job describing the setting of the city of lesser Malling. He did this by giving a vivid picture to the reader about the image of the country side, it seemed very peaceful and nice as if to lure the reader into the trap that would make this story intense. I would not however enjoy being in the setting of the latter part of the story. Once Matt realizes what he has gotten into the story turns dark and frightening. The reader can feel like he is in the story. Roodmas is very important because that is when the witches were at their full power and were planning on taking control of everything. If the author had made the setting different it would have ruined the book. It needed to be exactly how it was for everything in the book to fall into place.

Red Badge of Courage

Henry is the hero of the book but my favorite character was Jim. He kept Wilson and Henry safe and like a wise old man. He was quiet and soft spoken and was basically an average man. He was intelligent and played a key role in the book. Henry and Wilson were the immature "kids" and were the loud ones. Henry wanted the fame and the girls, and Wilson was oppionatated. They both endured many painful aspects of life together and they became the closest friends. There were also other characters that infulenced book greatly. Henry's mom did not want him to enlist and that plays a role later in the book. In one part in the book Henry incounters a tatterted soldier and leaves him for dead and that bothers him throughout the book. All in all the characters in the book were influential in the story plot and inhanced the quality of the book.

Shannon O'Connor Scene: The Color Purple

Although a lot of the book The Color Purple was very sad I think the most moving and sad scene was at the very beginning when Celie was getting abused by her father. The book was started off with such a powerful scene which really shocked me. Even though it was very hard to read on after reading something so horrible you must because of the curiosity to find out what happens to this poor girl. "He start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to it. But I don't never git used to it. And now I feels sick every time I be the one to cook." (11)

Character Sketch

My first impression of Gogol Ganguli was actually when he was in the womb of his mother, Ashima Ganguli. The book, The Namesake, follows the life of Gogol Ganguli through his triumphs and despairs. Gogol doesn’t remind me of someone I personally know, but he could represent a general Indian- American boy, who ends up growing tired of life in suburbia and decides to rebel against his parents to possibly make himself a better life. Gogol Ganguli looks like a stereotypical Indian- American man: with dark hair, dark eyes, and tan skin. Each different character has a different type of interaction with Gogol. His father is his strict parent and teacher; Ashoke was in a serious train wreck before coming to the United States, and this affected his relationship with his son. His mother, Ashima Ganguli, is protective and loving of her son, she wants the best for him and she wants him to do the best he can in everything he does. His sister, Sonia, is his partner in crime. When they were little Sonia was his best friend and Gogol was also a major influence on Sonia. All of Gogol’s lovers fell head over heels for him, but eventually they all drifted away.

Experiences or memories

I thought the saddest scene in the book was when Bob was knifed by Johnny. In this scene, a few Socs jump Johnny and Ponyboy. Two of the Socs hold Ponyboy's head under the water in the fountain until he blacks out. He wakes up later with Bob's corpse sitting right next to him. Johnny tells Ponyboy what happened "I had to. They were drowning you, Pony They might have killed you"(57). They then decide to flee town. This was very sad because although Socs treat the greasers very bad, Bob still didn't deserve death. This scene shows how much Johnny cares about his friends and gang members because when someone messes with the youngest of the gang, he killed them. The significance of this scene is that the greasers are all close and will do what ever it takes to survive and over come the Socs.

Acrostic Poem

R: Right or left either way you go you won't be able to escape. Once your in you can't get out and theres nothing you can do about it.

A: Adventure is plotted around every corner, waiting to pop out at you. Death and witchcraft control the book gibing the character little hope of life

V: "Visiting the town of lesser Malling was Matt's biggest mistake. He should have chosen prison."

E: Events theat take place in this town are unheard of by outsiders. No one knows what happens here not even when an explosion as large as a nuclear explosion occurs.

N: Not even the best of people can help. They try and try but cannot do anything about it.

S: Spells and magic is how the people of lesser Malling live. Controlling theirs and others lives with witchcraft.

G: Chastly horrors take place in this little town where everyone is in on a plan to take over the world with the help of a clueless innocent kid.

A: All of the world should have come to an end on Roodmas, the night when witches are at full power, but one boy and his determinded friend saved it.

T: Truthfully, this novel is a suspenseful thriller story that engulfs the reader from the first scene where a security guard is stabbed in a frantic attempt to escape a robbery.

E: "Everyone that tried to help ended up in trouble or dead"

Outsiders by SE Hinton

Setting

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is set in a large, unnamed town in the United States. It is about a gang of teenage boys who are called the Greasers. They live on the east side of the town, also known as the wrong side of town. The story is set in the 1960's and relates the incidents that take place over a few days. After killing Bob, Pony and Johnny take shelter in an abandoned church in Windrixville. After it catches fire and burns down, they return to their hometown, where Johnny dies in a hospital. These place was described as a bad place to be, it was as if everyone was against you just because you lived here on the east side of town.Setting is crucial to this story, for it is through their environment, the inner city, that Ponyboy and the other characters are defined. I would not want to live here because it is where the poor people are from, and these are the people that the rich people jump just for fun.

Character Sketch

My favorite Character in the book was Ponyboy by far. I liked him because he was a really sensitive 14-year-old boy living with his brother, Darry. His parents died in a car accident, so his brother had to drop out of school to support the family. His brother pushed him very hard to be a great student, which he was, but always yelled at him for being hard-headed. He was the only person that was part of the gang that enjoyed reading and going to movies by himself. I liked him because he shows that no matter what kind of a background you come from, you can be a good student, and be down to earth and not hood like all the other members of the gang. Pony boy, comparing himself to others in the gang, "I'm different in that way...nobody in the gang digs movies and books the way I do. For a while there, I thought I was the only person in the world that did"(7). Ponyboy was an incredible kid, because it seemed like everything was going wrong for him, but he still was able to stay a good person inside.

Shannon O'Connor Theme: The Color Purple

The theme in the Color Purple was is to stand up for yourself and that its okay to ask for help and opinions. In the beginning of the book Celie would just take the abuse from almost everyone and the only "person" she told was her diary to God. It was a very powerful message and was made clear in certain scenes, but it was not extremely obvious throughout the book. This theme and is a good thing to know throughout your life, if you are in a situation that you don't like, don't take it, fight back. “I don’t say nothing. I think bout Nettie, dead. She fight, she run away. What good it do? I don’t fight, I stay where I’m told. But I’m alive.” (22) “You ast yourself one question, it lead to fifteen. I start to wonder why us need love. Why us suffer. Why us black. Why us men and women. Where do children really come from. It didn’t take long to realize I didn’t hardly know nothing. And that if you ast yourself why you black or a man or a woman or a bush it don’t mean nothing if you don’t ast why you here, period.” (289-290)

Shannon O'Connor Character Sketch: The Color Purple

My first impression of Celie was to feel sorry for her. She was in a home where she was abused by pretty much everyone around her. She just took the abuse, she was quiet and would not fight back. She really reminds me of Precious, from the movie Precious. They were both in similar situations and neither of them fought back until the end. One thing to learn from Celie, and this book, would be to appreciate the homes we live in, and the lives we have.
"They calls me yellow like yellow be my name. But if yellow is a name. Why aint black the same. Well, if I say Hey black girl, Lord, she try to ruin my game"(96)

Ben Kelly
Setting

This book takes place in two time periods. Half in our time and half in the time of the indians. Robbie meets an indian named Red Hawk who lives in North America. Red Hawk simply says that they will be able to visit the past and they will not be seen. He says "He was met by a young indian boy...we'll be able to visit people and places of the past" (37) I would like to be in this setting because it would be fun to see how indians lived and how the sport lacrosse was played by them and how it has changed. If the story was placed in a different setting it wouldn't make sense because lacrosse was originated in North America.
Ben Kelly
List

1. "respect the game" -this is the main theme. The whole book revolves around this theme.
2. "no matter how talented someone might be, he was always obliged to contribute his efforts to the higher good---the team" -I think this is a great rule to live by. No matter what the team might be, a family or a lacrosse team. This is what Mr. Turnbull said to Jim Lewis when he give him the stick"
3. "every creature should be given the opportunity to succeed, the chance to spread its wings and reach its potential" I thought that this quote was really special. Jim Lewis says this right before he tried to hit a snake that was trying to eat a baby bird with a lacrosse ball.
4. "those to whom much is given, much is expected" I have heard this quote before and I believe it is true. Jim Lewis' high school coach told this to Jim.
5. "the pocket is the soul of the stick" I think this is true in lacrosse as well as in life. the pocket is equal to the brain of a person. Jim says this to Robbie to show him that he should take good care of the pocket.
Ben Kelly
Character Sketch

My first impression of the main character Robbie was that he was like me. This person reminds me of me because he enjoys what I enjoy. He likes sports and especially lacrosse. I did not learn much about this characters appearance but I learned that he is a very focused and dedicated person. In this book it is said that "those to whom much is given, much is expected"(28-29) This describes Robbie's behavior because he is given such a special thing, an old indian stick, so people have high expectations for him. Robbie is forced to try his hardest and to live his best.

Character Sketch - Morrie - Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Albom

The reader's first introduction to Morrie is that of him as a healthy, physically stable man. The stories of his wit and pep make one smile, therefore building up the readers view of him as a fully functioning human being, therefore when he weakens, one has an even greater pang of emotion and pity, because one "knew" him in his former days. Morrie has the soul and wisdom of a philosopher, inside the body of a grandfather. Despite his frailty, he manages to pass on his wisdom to the next generation, in the hope that they might fare better than so many before him. Albom's portrayal of Morrie as a weakening individual illustrates the hope that even the creatures with the least stature and standing in our world today can make a difference. While Morrie may be gone, his legacy lives forever.

2.Elizabeth Bennet rejects Mr. Darcy's first marrage propousal calling him arogant and unpleasent.

10. Mr. Darcy Proposes to Elizabeth for the second time and this time she accepts, and they get married along with Jane and Bingley.

Theme - Tuesdays with Morrie

There are many underlying themes of Tuesdays with Morrie, mainly relating to problems with our society today, and how to correct them. However the most prevalent and continual theme is that "When you learn how to die, you learn how to live". This is a quote proclaimed by a dying man, who, despite his feebleness, manages to live a fuller life than most people ever do.

Inés Bustamante Pride and Prejudice Charecter Sketch Mr. Darcy

Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a wealthy young man. At first he may come off as arrogant to the reader, but his soft and intellectual side are later made clear by his actions towards Elizabeth Bennet. He comes off as extremely bord and uninterested with his fellow townsmen. He seems to think that he is better than everyone else around him. Elizabeth is a poor young woman born in situations that are beneath her potential. She is extremely intelligent and quick witted, and is very much like Mr. Darcy. She however thinks too low of him to love him at first. He is obviously Elizabeth Bennet's perfect match, however neither of them realize this until later in the story. At first Mr. Darcy thinks too much of himself to acknowledge his attraction towards her. All he can think about is the "inferiority of [Elizabeth Bennet's] circumstances."(34) This is a great quote because it shows both his self consciousness about Elizabeth and his seeming lack of charm. In the end they both set aside their pride and their prejudice and are able to love each other.

Explore Feelings

There was one scene in the book that i thought was extremely funny. In this scene the titan lord chronos sends out a huge flying pig to kill Percy. In percy's words this is how he described what he had to do to take down the pig “It’s one thing to climb a rope in gym class. It’s a completely different thing to climb a rope attached to a moving pig’s wing while your flying at a hundred miles an hour” (250). The noise the pig made was funny and amusing. This was such a funny scene because you don't normally think of giant flying pigs. Percy's fight with the pig tires him out a little but he still has enough energy left to keep fighting a little longer.

August Boatwright
August Boatwright is a successful beekeeper that makes all of her money on honey itself. She grew up with three other sisters May, June, and April. April died and left May very sad and still has problems today. August lives with her sisters May and June and has beehives all over Tiburon. August has been through a lot and she doesn't regret any of it. She is very wise and has a story to tell for every question you ask her. August is a strong woman with very few worries and a huge heart. She welcomed Lily and Rosaleen without question and would welcome anyone. Augus would do anything to make someone just a little bit happy for example Lily asked her why she painted the house flamingo pink and she replied "That was May's doing. When we went to the paint shop, she latched on to a color called, "Caribbean Pink." She said it made her feel like dancing a Spanish Flamenco. I personally thought it was the tackiest color I had ever seen, but I figured if it could lift May's heart, it was good enough to live in."

Character sketch

The first impression i had of Percy Jackson was that he was a nice funny person. Percy reminds me of another character in the book named Anna Beth. Anna Beth and Percy are alike because they are both courageous and have a sense of humor even in the worst situations. From percy i think we can learn how to be more laid back and not worry so much about certain things as much as we do. Most characters in this book think percy is a great leader and a nice guy to be around. Percy's life a lot of times is chaotic and most of the time he is fighting monsters and he sometimes does not have time to enjoy life. Sometimes percy just wants to be a normal person since his life is anything but normal “Let’s pretend we’re a couple of normal people.” (8)

J- Judgmental. June was very judgmental towards Lily first of all because she was white and second of all she thought that Lily was overstaying her welcome. Once Lily was on her way to the restroom and overheard August and June's conversation;"'But she's white, August' June said' Lets see if we can help her, we owe her that' August replied"(87)
U- Uninviting. June was not a horrible person but she was very closed. She didn't accept new people like her sister's did and it took more than a sweet thought to win her over. She hated that Lily was white and when Lily came to touch the Black Madonna "As I rose from my chair, my head was still swimming some. I walked toward black Mary with my hand lifted. But just as I was bout to reach her, June stopped playing. She stopped right in the middle of the song, and i was left in the silence with my and stretched out."
N- Noticeable June's personality is definitely full of confidence and bluntness. She played the cello very well and had a boyfriend Neil that just couldn't get him to marry her but after May died she decided that she should just take a chance and marry Neil. He came over planning to ask her to marry him for the hundredth time and all she said was " All right, lets get married"
E- Expressive June expressed her feelings through her music. She played the cello for the daughters of Mary every Sunday and she practiced every chance she got. "June played us a gloomy-sounding song on the cello while August retold black Mary's storying start to finish."

P
erseverance is on of Percy's strong suits. When Percy said “if I really had the power, what difference would a week make? I could end this threat right here by taking down Kronos. Hey, I’d fought monsters and gods before” (21) it shows that even if the odds are against him he will keep trying until he succeeds. This makes percy very successful because he does not just back down if obstacles come up.

Excellent fighter. One of percy's main attributes is that he is a great fighter. this also makes him a great leader on the battle field since he knows exactly what to do in any situation.

Ready to help anyone in need. Percy is a very kind and caring person. if anyone is in danger he would go and help them and stop what he is doing. Percy would do almost anything to save the lives of his friends.

Courageous. Percy is not afraid of anything. He will do anything necessary without fear of doubt. Even when he was facing the titan lord chronos he kept calm and did what he had to do.

Your friend. Percy is a very friendly person. He makes friends with most people he meets. This is mostly because he has a lot of good qualities such as being kind and sometimes being funny.

Molly McGregor Top Ten List

  1. Lily loved the bees. She was not afraid of them.
  2. Lily's successful plan to free Rosaleen and run away from T. Ray
  3. Lily's courage to ask August if she and Rosaleen could stay with her.
  4. Black Madonna's presence and what she did for Lily.
  5. Zach not caring about Lily's white skin or his black skin. He loved her anyway.
  6. May's hats. She was the most optimistic person all of the time except when a bug got squished or a hurtful word was said.
  7. The Daughters of Mary and their funeral for May
  8. The wall and what it did for May.
  9. Lily's courage to talk to August about her mother and what happened the day she died.
  10. Lily's courage to stand up to her father and never let him get to her despite the grits, peaches, and his attitude that she hated so much.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne:

H err Liszt, is Bruno’s teacher, who would come to their house for school. Because Out With was so out of touch with any real civilization, they had a teacher who would come and teach them at their house. Bruno was not a big fan of him because he limited Bruno’s creativity.

Out with is the concentration camp, which was in reach of Bruno. Bruno didn’t know it was a concentration camp at the time. He went there multiple times because he had made his only friend, Shmeul, there. Although there were barbed-wire fences all around the camp, Bruno enjoyed talking with his new companion, and occasionally, Bruno would bring Shmuel food.

Loveable Bruno died in the concentration camp, in search of Shmuel’s father. After Shmuel’s father went “missing”, Bruno squeezed under the gate, and changed into a pair of clothes that Shmuel had provided. Bruno was in it for the adventure, but after being in the camp for a few seconds, Bruno felt the urge to leave. Being a good friend, Bruno decided to stay with Shmuel to search for Shmuel’s father. Before he had finished the search, the soldiers ordered a march. Bruno and Shmuel were quickly placed in the middle of all of the chaos. When they went into the gas chamber, but Bruno had assumed that they were just getting out of the rain. Before he knew it, they both died a sad death.

Over worked, doesn’t even cover what the Prisoners had to go through. For example, Pavel was forced into peeling potatoes, instead of being a doctor, which he was before he was taken to the camp. Shmeul was parted from his family, and to add to that, he wasn’t feed enough.

Carefully, Pavel tried to pour wine for Lieutenant Kotler. He missed the wine glass and accidently spilled it unto the lap of the Lieutenant. “What happened then was both unexpected and extremely unpleasant. Lieutenant Koler grew very angry with Pavel and no one- not Bruno, Not Gretel, not mother and not even Father – stepped in to stop him doing what he did next, even though none of them could watch, even though it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale (148)”. The lieutenant beat Pavel, which is heartbreaking because Pavel’s character is exceptionally innocent. Later that night, Bruno realized what a horrible man the Lieutenant was, but most of all, he noticed the fact that his father didn’t stop it from happening.

Ardent feelings were portrayed in this novel. For Bruno, it was the feeling of friendship. For his father, it was the feeling of defeat. For his mother, it was the feeling of remorse, for the people who were being tortured only minutes away. Last, Shmeul was feeling lonely and disconnected from the real world.

Unfortunate Shmuel was in the camp, staving for months. The only thing that he had left was his family, who all disappeared though out time. If it weren’t for Bruno, Shmeul wouldn’t even have anything to look forward to. Thanks to Bruno, Shmuel was provided with food and friendship.

Smells of the dead bodies went into the air. Bruno’s mother didn’t realize what the smell was until Lieutenant Koler accidently informed her. This is the beginning of the rocky relationship between Bruno’s parents. A bit later, She decides that it would be best if her and her children were to move away from the camp. Although, before that could happen, it was too late for Bruno, because before they left, he was gassed.

Time was of the essence to Bruno. When he first moved to Out With, he was counting the days until he was able to go home. As time passed, Bruno became less focused on counting time and enjoyed his new life there. It also played a big part in Shmuel’s life as well. He only had weeks before he was to die from one thing to another.

lauren sands- setting

Setting:

Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne:

Bruno resided in the time of the Holocaust. His house was placed a few miles away from the camp, which was within Bruno’s reach. It happened to be a special place for Bruno because without it, he wouldn’t have a friend. Shmuel, his friend, was the same age as he and would often times entertain Bruno. Him and Shmuel didn’t have to physically play. Instead, they would sit and talk. Resulting from this, Bruno built a strong relationship with Shmuel. The camp was a horrid place, where they would torture the lives of the Jewish people, by starving them and over working them. When Bruno first moved into his new home, his room had a small window in it, through which he could catch a glimpse of a “farm”. It wasn’t a farm, but a concentration camp. Innocent Bruno had just assumed it was a farm, until later he discovered that it wasn’t a farm at all. From Bruno’s window you could see a “huge wire fence that ran along the length of the house and turned in at the top, extending further along in either direction, further than (anyone) could possibly see. The fence was very high, higher even than the house they were standing in, and there were huge wooden posts, like telegraph poles, dotted along it, holding it up. At the top of the fence enormous bales of barbed wire were tangled in spirals (32)”. This fence separated the Bruno’s life with Shmuel’s. It hurt Shmuel to live there because his relatives were being killed. He was uninformed of what was happening. The scenery is vital to the story because without it, Bruno would not die in the end and Shmuel would never have a friend. I would hate to be in this setting because I would be traumatized, hungry, tired, and mainly dehumanized, like Shmuel was. Although, if the story were to be in another time, Bruno might have found out all about the camps and Shmuel might have perished.

Character sketch-

Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne:

In the beginning, my intuition of Bruno was that he was a spoiled little boy. He was moving out of Berlin with his family to go to a place called “Out With”, which was their residence near the concentration camp. As the house in Berlin is described, you become aware of their wealth. To add to that, their family had to move up to Out With, meaning that Bruno’s father must have played a very critical position in the camp. Bruno reminds me of my younger cousin, because he is naive of what is happening in the holocaust. Bruno didn’t know a lot about Jews or even that he lived next to a camp. My cousin is also a big adventurer, like Bruno. Although Bruno was clearly informed that he shouldn’t explore, it was his nature and he couldn’t contain himself. It was these explorations that lead him to the camp. Judging Bruno from his elegant clothing, you can see that Bruno had to dress to impress. Many important soldiers would come to his house, including “the Fury”. Although, judging that the garment was too small, states that his life wasn’t always about looking fancy for others. From Bruno’s behavior, and the way his family treats him, you can tell that Bruno is like any other young boy; He loves to play and is very curious. He could remember the times at his old house and he recalled when he “used to enjoy exploring. And that was in Berlin, where (he) knew everywhere and could find anything (he) wanted with a blindfold on. (He has) never done any exploring here. Perhaps its time (he should) start (99)”. He starts to explore outside of his household area. Soon after he leaves his home, he walks right into the face of death. The sad thing is that Bruno never did realize what he was doing, or exactly why Shmuel, his companion from the camp, always looked so drowsy and famished. It was his curiosity that set him up to die.

Explore Feelings:

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

Very close to the beginning of the story the reader finds out that Christopher died. “I hate to tell you this, mister, buy your friend is dead. Frozen to death up on the tundra” (60). As I read while Christopher explained his adventure I kept thinking about is death. This took away the thrill of his adventure. At times I got frustrated so I could save Chris so he didn’t have to die.

Character Sketch:

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

My first impression of Christopher Johnson McCandless is that he is a rebel. He seems to do things in his own way. McMandless believed, “ he answered to statutes of a higher order-that as a latter-day adherent of Henry David Thoreau, he took as gospel the essay ‘ On the Duty of Civil Disobedience’ and thus considered it his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state” (28). He didn’t fallow the law. He had to abandon his car because he went into the area with a high flood warning

Literary Techniques:

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

“An hour later violent gusts started blowing down from the desert, and the wind and title rips conspired to carry him out to sea” (36). Krakauer chose these words to express his idea that he is in a battle with nature. The words conspired means that nature is planning against him. This relates to the entire book in which Christopher is trying to prove that he is stronger than nature.

Travel team by Mike lupica

1. My first impression of danny was that he was a small kid with alot of heart. He reminds me of santiago a little bit because when santiago is fishing he never gives up. You can tell by his behavior that he loves the game of basketball. He never gves up. You learn from danny that you cant measure heart. "He knew he was small." "He just didnt think he was small". "Big difference".

6. When danny gets in a fight with a kid name teddy it really makes me angry because teddy starts bad mouthing dannys father. I dont like it when you talk about someones parents. "Your dad? teddy said. sponser a team? With what his bar tips.?" Dannys father spends a ton of time at the bar watching games and drinking. Dannys father use to play basketball and was about to go pro until he got into a crash that change him as a person. By teddy saying this it made danny hurt and mad inside. Both boys get into a fight. Danny gets in major trouble with his mother and gets grounded for a week. A whole week of no TV,video games, or computer.

11. this book takes place in the 20th century, in a little town known has middle town. In the book they mention the city is a small town, also the clothing worn in the book are casual colthing worn today, and finally you really couldnt tell the seasons. Travel basketball is played all around from my experience. I would love to be in this situation because i feel that danny is the underdog and i love being the underdog in situations because then as danny i could prove to everyone that i should have made the travel team. If this took place along time ago i dont think any thing would really have been different. Maybe the clothing and shoes might have look different but no drastic change. He parked near the corner of clevand and earl.... in this stupid small small- minded town."

top 10 list

Katherine Hunsaker

English 8-3

3/10/10

Top 10 List:

1. My favorite quote is when he writes on the bus, “Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, ‘Cause “The west is the best.” And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual revolution. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the great white north. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become Lost in the Wild.

Alexander Supertramp

May 1992

2. My second favorite scene in the book is when he fools his parents into thinking he’s going to college, but he takes his car, burns all his money and ID, and becomes a hitchhiker. I like this scene because this is when he becomes actually free from civilization.

3. The most irritating/sad thing in the book is that it was juts 2 or 3 weeks when people found him dead in the abandoned bus. If he had eaten berries or caught one animal or if he survived somehow, he would have been rescued and his life would have been saved.

4. I loved how he met people when he was on his way to Alaska; he made new friends every stop and was a very likeable guy. I believe people liked him for his sharp mind and unique personality and desire to be a hitchhiker. His deceiving looks attracted only the real Samaritans to help him.

5. Something that stunned me was that he hated his parents so much. They never abused him but were just simply trying to be normal parents like any other couple. His personality was just too stubborn to get along with them. I felt sad for his parents when he ran away and didn’t even tell them where he was going, what he was doing, etc. His parents loved him very much and couldn’t believe it.

6. This brings us to his relationship with his sister. Since he didn’t like his parents, his sister was the closest to him in his family. He always wrote her letters and they kept in touch most of the time when he was gone. I suspect that the sister knew he was going to break away, the real question was when he was going to break away.

7. One of the many characteristics I loved about Chris McCandless that kind of relates to me is he doesn’t like to have new things when the old ones work perfectly fine. For example, for graduation his parents got him a new car and he was very upset. Because, when his old car worked perfectly fine and he loved it, he didn’t want a new one. I feel the same way…why spend the money when you don’t need anything new?

8. Another trait I loved about him was that he loved the wilderness. He was extremely smart for his age, reading all kinds of deep books and understanding the symbolism of the books about nature. He didn’t care about the outside world or what anyone else said, he was on a mission. Dying is what it took to realize happiness only comes from human relations instead of being a loner, even how great nature is won’t bring you eternal happiness.

9. I did not like in the book how the author switched stories when you were right in the middle of another. It was quite annoying to the point where you want to skip the pages until you get to Chris’s story.

10. Last, I absolutely loved the movie they made. When it showed his death, it symbolized him going into heaven in a way, it was really neat. In the book, I loved seeing all the real pictures of Chris McCandless/Alex Supertramp leaning against the bus, or any other pictures. It gave me an idea what he was going through. I loved Into the Wild overall.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Eric Stern
Acrostic Poem

P
erseverance is the key element of Percy's quest. Without Percy's great determination on this long quest, nothing would be possible. He has plenty of drive and self-confidence to save his friends from even the slightest type of danger.

Either exuberant, eager, or energetic could be Percy's middle name. He is always ready to complete a heroic and exciting task. Percy is motivated to retrieve his mother from the Underworld who was defeated by the Minotaur. Besides this, Percy is elite, for he is the son of the sea god.

Riptide, the name of Percy's sword, is the name of the game each and every time he gets involved in a predicament with an enemy. Often, he draws this sword to save the life of his friends. He uses Riptide with great rigor to fight off and kill the enemies.

Chaos and confusion repeatedly occur when Percy engages in a clash. He fights off the three evil sisters on a bus, Echidna, the Chimera, and Crusty. The kids were very confused on their journey to find the Master Bolt because they were given few instructions on how to do so.

Yikes! Percy has performed numerous stunts throughout the book, such as jumping off the Gateway Arch ten stories above water or saving Ares' shield without the fatality of death. Percy is an extremely brave character who seemingly has no fear.

Jovial in many ways, Percy likes to be happy, outgoing, and be able to cheer up his friends and family in any way possible. For instance, Percy enjoys telling jokes to his friends.

Accomplishing everything he starts, is very meaningful to Percy. If Percy knows he can achieve a major task, he will strive to do it. In addition, Percy is extremely agile while using his sword, Riptide. He knows that it is extremely crucial to be light-footed while in combat.

Conquering fears is what Percy's life is all about. Percy overcame his fear of heights when he jumped down into the Mississippi River from the Gateway Arch. Another great achievement Percy had was when he clobbered Team Ares (Ares is the god of war) in Capture the Flag.

Keeping faith in himself and his friends, assisted Percy in the quest to return the Master Bolt back to Zeus. Without any faith, nothing is possible. On the other hand, people with faith live long, rewarding lives because they believe they can succeed in various things.

Sensational storyline; this is the type of book where I am continuously reading without glancing down at the page numbers. In shorter terms, it has many cliff-hangars. "We had been in Lotus Casino for five days. We had only one day left until the summer solstice. One day to complete our quest" (265). In addition, Percy is exceptionally skillful with Riptide.

Omnipotent can easily describe Percy, as he is the unconquerable and almighty one. He always knows a way out of a difficult situation.

Noble character. Percy has extraordinarily honorable, unselfish, and glorious characteristic traits. He knows that lying, stealing, and cheating are totally unacceptable. When a friend of his is in need of care or attention, Percy is always there for them no matter what.

The Secret Life of Bees- Literary Technique

Lily comes a long way just to get one answer: if her Mom loves her, or if she left her. Close to the end, August gives Lily some of Deborah's belongings that she left behind. In the hatbox where the items were stored, she finds a picture of her Mom where "... her head bent toward a little girl who sat in a high chair with a smudge of baby food on the side of her mouth. The woman's hair curled in forty directions, beautiful, like it has just had it's hundred strokes. She held a baby spoon in her right hand. Light glazed on her face. The little girl wore a bib with a teddy bear on it. A sprig of hair on top of her head was tied with a bow. She lifted one hand toward the woman... I figured May must've made it to heaven and explained to my mother about the sign I wanted. The one that would let me know I was loved" (275, 276).
I love this quote because it is a very important time in Lily's journey because she discovers what she was searching for in the beginning. It is a really relieving moment in the book for both the reader and Lily because we all realize that Deborah did love Lily. It is also a great quote because it is easy to picture what the photo looks like without actually seeing it. It would definitely go under the category of good diction that reveals imagery. I think the author used this device so the reader can really see in their mind what the picture actually looks like, and to also get a sense of what Lily was feeling when she first sees it. A distinct image pops into my head when I read tis quote, and I think that's what Sue Monk Kidd was going for.

character sketch--into the wild

Katherine Hunsaker

English 8-3

Chris McCandless/Alex Supertramp

Character sketch: What was your first impression of a character?Well, I saw the movie before the book so I kind of knew what kind of guy Chris McCandless was but my impression of him was that he was a young guy, didn’t like his parents, and just wanted to be free from everyone. He wanted to go to Alaska to escape civilization and he knew what he wanted so he followed through with it. He doesn’t remind me of anyone I know because everyone I know is very social and would never leave and hitch hike. But, I think the closest to his characteristics is myself. I can be social but sometimes I just want to get away. Although, I think I like the IDEA of going out on my own and living in the wilderness (because I love camping) a lot better then I would actually like being out there by myself. I do often think how awesome it would be to meet new people along the way and live off the land. When you look at Chris McCandless, you see a sharp guy whose got his head on right. He looks well rounded and clean. But, when you look at Alex Supertramp, you see someone entirely different. His grown out hair and scraggly beard and bad hygiene gives you the impression he doesn’t take care of himself and he’s some homeless creepy guy. He’s very skinny because he had no food. You can tell he’s a mountain guy because of his big hiking pack on his shoulders. When you meet Chris, like before, you see a well rounded, smart young man who is probably getting a good education. But then again, when you see Alex, he still acts as a very intelligent person, but he is a bit mysterious because of his low profile background and the mystery why he’s there? Why he won’t tell his parents where he is? Other characters have thought the same exact thing as I just stated but they also said he was very stubborn and very confident, almost too much. I picked two quotes. The first is for Chris McCandless, after learned his lesson, I think this quote suits him well…”I have lived through much and now I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it don’t to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one’s neighbor—such is my idea of happiness. And then, on top of all that, you for a mate, and children, perhaps—what more can the heart of a man desire?” He wrote this while stranded on his bus during some of his last days. I would of picked two years he walks the earth. No phone…and so on but I used that quote in my acrostic so I picked the next best two. The two quotes I picked for the unexperienced Alex Supertramp are these: “Lara walked along the tracks following a path worn by pilgrims and then turned into the fields. Here she stopped and, closing her eyes, took a deep breath of the flower-scented air of the broad expanse around her. It was dearer to her than her kin, better than a lover, wiser than a book. For a moment she rediscovered the purpose of her life. She was here on earth to grasp the meaning of its wild enchantment and to call each thing by its right name, or, if this were not within her power, to givebirth out of love for life to successors who would do it in her place.” He identified this paragraph while reading this book and wrote nature/purity in the margins. “Oh, how one wishes sometimes to escape from the meaningless dullness of human eloquence, from all those sublime phrases, to take refuge in nature, apparently so inarticulate, or in the wordlessness of long, grinding labor, of sound sleep, of true music, or of a human understanding rendered speechless by emotion!” this was also one of his favorites and he specifically underlined refuge in nature. This describes his personality.

SPOILER ALERT J

Interestingly compelling to all kinds of people who want to escape from their confusing, annoying, and overwhelming society or community. It’s hard to put down because of Chris McCandless’s unique way of thinking and acting. The nature of the wilderness attracts you to explore the forest with Alex Supertramp and experience all his emotions and physical activities.

Naturally a tragic story of the boy who thought he could do anything with his well-developed skills but only to find out this was not possible. This is why only his remains were found in an old, abandoned bus in the middle of Alaska. His family he had a grudge against cared about him greatly, but he didn’t care what they thought, he just wanted to escape reality.

Tremendously strange character in the book, but you either develop a strong liking for his charisma or a deep down desire to question his actions and his personality. You get the feeling he had some problems but you want to imitate his actions at the same time. Your mind is split between everything about him, his characteristics, his actions, the way he talks, his appearance, his stories, and his desires.

Often intriguing, but there were times where the author talked about other people’s experiences with his mountains, including his own, that you would rather not hear but rather get on with the story. Overall, the story was well-told and it’s a story you won’t forget. I recommend to everyone to read this story, for it gives you a desire to experience the one of the greater things in life, nature.

Towering feelings of exhilaration, inspiration, and exaltation. This book shares with you the confused but logical thoughts that Chris McCandless once had. When he goes to Alaska to survive in the wilderness, your not left behind, the description and elaboration of the facts in the book makes it feel like your in his shoes.

He, Alex Supertramp, gave money to the starving, but he died later from starvation. This arouses suspicion of suspecting his own death. Because what are the chances he gives all that he has to a charity for starving people and then he dies of starvation himself.
Effective on everyone who read the book. Into the Wild makes you have second thoughts about your life situation. Like if you need to be making the best of your life and taking risks, instead of worrying about getting into a good college. Sadly, society has taken me over because all I can worry about is getting into a good college, being successful, getting a job with a good salary. The book made me realize I need to kick back and enjoy being a kid because I’m only in 8th grade.

Wilderness is the key of the story, Chris wanted to be alone in his own world. Most people like the idea of going and living off land but hate it once they got out there. Chris was different, he knew the basics of living. He knew the essentials for healthy life.

Initially a very popular book, well liked by the readers, and also documented into a movie. The movie is absolutely fantastic, I cannot decide wich I like better, the movie or the book. But I know they represent the hardships of Chris McCandless and Alex Supertramp. They both have the same message too, that happiness only comes from human relaions, which I believe in strongly.

Life or Death? No one knows which is better. Most people think life but this is only because life is the only thing they’ve experienced. Chris McCandless didn’t know what was better, he just decided to live life to the fullest instead of waiting around to see what death looked like. He hitchhiked all the way to Alaska. He had no money, no food, he was all on his own.

Defiance of society was his motto. “Two years he walks the earth.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Eric Stern
Explore Feelings

In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan, the scene I found to be very intriguing was when Percy, Annabeth, and Grover were on their way to the Underworld to talk to Hades (god of the Underworld) to see if he had stolen the Master Bolt from Zeus. On their way, they came across some teenagers who were up to no good. The boys ended up chasing them into Crusty's Water Bed Palace, a store that sells "water beds". Annabeth and Grover get persuaded by Crusty (Procrustes is Crusty's mythological name) to lie down in a water bed. Unfortunately, once the kids get in the bed and lie down, he says "Ergo" which triggers ropes to come up from under the bed and stretch the kids. "Ropes sprang from the sides of the bed, lashing around Annabeth, holding her to the mattress" (278). Luckily, Percy came to the rescue, once again to save his friends. He then asked Crusty to lie in a bed to demonstrate how the bed worked. When he was on the bed, Percy yelled "Ergo" to initiate the ropes to pull him apart. Percy tricked Crusty and was able to save his friends.

This scene was definitely one of my favorite parts in the book for numerous different reasons. Just like I said in my first blog (Character Sketch), Percy is a brave and daring hero who can persevere through almost everything. If he had been tricked by Crusty, the quest to find the Master Bolt would have been a complete failure. Annabeth and Grover on the other hand, do not have good strategic thinking like Percy, so they always rely on him. Perhaps, this could foreshadow Percy saving his friends once again when they get into a pickle with Hades in the Underworld. This scene displays Percy's self-confidence because he knows what do to at the right time.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Eric Stern
Character Sketch

In Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief, by Rick Riordan, Percy displays various characteristics that show his courageousness and bravery. Percy is a half-blood which means that he is the son of a god, who is Poseidon (the sea god), and an immortal (his mother). This means that water is his friend and will not hurt him, only heal him. The storyline of this book is Percy Jackson and his friends, Annabeth and Grover must find Zeus' Master Bolt and return it to him before the Summer Solstice. If this quest is not completed, a huge war would break out between the gods.

Initially, Percy Jackson depicted many notable personality traits that I found interesting. In the beginning of the book, Percy was portrayed as being a loser who had only a handful of friends. Percy, similar to friends of mine, has dyslexia and ADHD. Dyslexia is a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and numbers. This does not affect intelligence. Percy, tried to make the best of his school career even though he was kicked out of some odd number of schools each year.

Secondly, Percy demonstrates heroic traits in his adventure returning the Master Bolt back to Zeus. For instance, Percy is very loyal to his friends as shown when he rescues them countless number of times from danger. Namely, when Annabeth and Grover let Echidna take a picture of them and turn them into a statue of stone for eternity. To save his friends, Percy uncaps Riptide (his pen that turns into a sword) and kills Echidna. Bravery is another characteristic that Percy exemplifies. When Percy is at the top of the Gateway Arch (above the Mississippi River), a Chihuahua transforms itself into a chimera and tries to kill him. Fortunately, Percy sticks to his gut and jumps down and falls in the Mississippi River. "But my impact with the water hadn't hurt. I was falling slowly now, bubbles trickling up through my fingers" (212). Percy was saved by this act because he had faith that his father, Poseidon, was watching over him.

Clearly, Percy Jackson shows his courageousness in this book. In every fatal situation that Percy gets involved in, he finds an option to save not only himself, but his friends as well. He can easily be considered as a Christ figure and a hero because he shows his willingness and desire to accomplish things that he thought he could never complete.

August Acrostic- The Secret Life of Bees

*SPOILER ALERT*

Always there for her loved ones, August has a caring heart and has open arms for anyone that needs her. She gives great advice and knows how to handle any situation she faces. August is a loving figure that will always strive to do what is right.

Under immense pressure, August still possesses grace in the hardest times. When May dies, August mourns quietly and doesn't disturb or sadden others with the gloominess that she feels. She understands that it isn’t right to bring others down with you.

Gentle and caring, August is like the motherly figure Lily never had. August accepts Lily even though she is a white girl and a perfect stranger. August lets Lily tell her lies, even when she knows what Lily is saying to her isn’t true. August constantly tries to guide Lily in the right direction, but in a way that does not embarrass Lily. She nurtures Lily like a loving mother would.

Uplifting towards everyone, August makes people feel comfortable no matter what. Unlike June who wasn’t welcoming to Lily at first, August reaches out a hand and includes Lily like she is part of the family. She takes things as they come, and doesn’t hesitate to be kind or thoughtful.

Sophisticated and mature, August knows what life is really about. She is content with how she lives her life and isn’t concerned about what others might think about her. Lily could learn from her wise ways and realize that “some things don’t matter that much, Lily. Like the color of a house. How big is that in the overall scheme of life? But lifting a person’s heart- now, that matters” (147).

The reason August is so special is because she lives life being the best person that she can. She is always thoughtful, and considers other people’s needs before her own. She treats every person she meets with respect and kindness. She doesn’t sail through life without a care. She thinks about how to act and to live life as a better person. August is like a motherly figure to Lily, but she also acts like a Christ figure to everyone else around her.

Taking the Hit- The Secret Life of Bees

Explore feelings.
In The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, a scene I find especially frustrating is when Rosaleen refuses to apologize to the white men she poured her "snuff jug" on.
When Lily and Rosaleen are on their way into town so Rosaleen can vote, they run into trouble. They see white men playing a card game and the men start saying offensive words to Rosaleen. Lily tries to calm Rosaleen before anything gets out of hand, but it is too late. Rosaleen takes the situation into her own hands, and throws her cup of spit on the men's shoes. They react angrily, and a policeman who is close by escorts Rosaleen and Lily to jail. While in the car, both women could see that the men are following them because they were not done with Rosaleen. When they arrive at the police station, the men are waiting for Rosaleen. The gang leader named Franklin is gripping a hefty flashlight in his hands, and as soon as they get close enough, he smacks Rosaleen on the head with it. When he does this, he asks for an apology, but she refuses to give him one. After a little bit, the policeman stops the violence and escorts Rosaleen and Lily inside. Later, T. Ray comes to get Lily. In the meantime, Rosaleen is being taken to the hospital because "two of them held me by the arms while the other one hit me- the one with the flashlight. He said 'Nigger, you say you're sorry.' When I didn't, he came at me. He hit me until the policeman said that was enough. They didn't get an apology, though," (46). It makes me sick to think that people actually treated African Americans like that. I wish Rosaleen would give them what they want, and go on. I think that this scene shows that Rosaleen is a strong-willed person that doesn't give up easily. There is a possibility that this scene could foreshadow later events. I think Rosaleen will be the protector of Lily, causing herself pain for Lily's sake. The scene portrays Rosaleen's confidence in her beliefs, and how she will not let go of her opinion because someone criticizes her for the way she thinks. I just wish she did not have to get hurt because of her convictions. I find her attitude very admirable in a person.
