The story begins as Ashoke and Ashima leave Calcutta, India and settle in Central Square, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Ganguli family lives in suburbs for most of their lifetime, until Gogol moves to the big city to follow his dream and meet the love(s) of his life. Gogol’s father also goes to Ohio, where he eventually dies of heart complications, to work for a college. The setting of the story (in the suburbs) may seem insignificant, but it actually was very important. By growing up in a close-knit society of mainly other Bengali families, Gogol and his little sister were not exposed to much of the outside world. I would consider living in this setting, mainly because I am close to it in retrospect now. Medium sized society in a quiet neighborhood and private school. I wouldn’t really change where I live, because I enjoy my current setting and I believe it is a good place to grow up. If the story had taken place back in India, Gogol’s life/name/friends/education would be completely different.

top 10 character list for Ravens Gate
The following list will be ten characters from the book placed from least (10) to favorite (1) each will have a brief explanation of why or why not I liked the character.
10. Gwenda Davis: She is Matt’s aunt and guardian who takes care of Matt and her boyfriend. Her attitude annoys me because it always seems like she does everything to her own benefit. She takes care of Matt and everything but she doesn’t really care for him at all.
9. Kelvin: this is Matt’s “friend” that talks him into steeling DVDs from a warehouse. After tripping the alarm and being caught by the security guard, Kelvin does the only thing he can do and stabs the security guard then was caught by the police. If Kelvin hadn’t done this, Matt would not have been but in the position to die from Ms. Deverill.
8. Miss Creevy: She makes me think of a hag looking person with the giant hairy mole on the side of her chin. She gives me the feeling of a typical witch and I strongly dislike her because she is so mysterious and seems so innocent.
7. Mrs. Deverills cat: This cat is very sneaky and follows Matt and Tom Burgess into a forest and is later killed. The creepiest thing about this cat is that the next day the cat showed up alive again and ready to kill.
6. Mrs. Deverill: She is the one who took Matt into her care for the LEAF project. She seems like a completely friendly person but then again she is the one who plotted the overall scheme.
5. Steven Mallory: He is the one who set Matt up with the leaf project. I like him because he was very nice to Matt and died trying to save him.
4. Tom Burgess: He met up with Matt in the forest and gave him a medallion that would allow Matt to see his way without it being obscured by the magic. He offers to help Matt escape but when Matt arrived at his house the next morning he was dead.
3. Matt: He of course is the main character and goes through a lot during the story. He is not number one only because he has a sour attitude sometimes and seems to do whatever he wants his way. Either way he is a good character and is one to be liked.
2. Sanjay Dravid: One of the coolest characters in the story, he is part of the Nexus which is a secret organization. He finds Matt on an internet IM chat box and meets with him later in the story. Unfortunately him just like every other character that helps him in the story dies.
1. Richard Cole: the very best character in the story. Starts out as a newspaper journalist for the city of Greater Malling. He meets Matt and is completely aghast by his story. Although he thinks it is completely made up he goes along with Matt and ends up helping him escape. After being caught in the Natural History Museum with a bunch of rogue skeleton dinosaurs, Matt fears the worst but in the end he was able to escape and he saves Matt.

Character Sketch
My first impression of Gogol Ganguli was actually when he was in the womb of his mother, Ashima Ganguli. The book, The Namesake, follows the life of Gogol Ganguli through his triumphs and despairs. Gogol doesn’t remind me of someone I personally know, but he could represent a general Indian- American boy, who ends up growing tired of life in suburbia and decides to rebel against his parents to possibly make himself a better life. Gogol Ganguli looks like a stereotypical Indian- American man: with dark hair, dark eyes, and tan skin. Each different character has a different type of interaction with Gogol. His father is his strict parent and teacher; Ashoke was in a serious train wreck before coming to the United States, and this affected his relationship with his son. His mother, Ashima Ganguli, is protective and loving of her son, she wants the best for him and she wants him to do the best he can in everything he does. His sister, Sonia, is his partner in crime. When they were little Sonia was his best friend and Gogol was also a major influence on Sonia. All of Gogol’s lovers fell head over heels for him, but eventually they all drifted away.

Acrostic Poem
A: Adventure is plotted around every corner, waiting to pop out at you. Death and witchcraft control the book gibing the character little hope of life
V: "Visiting the town of lesser Malling was Matt's biggest mistake. He should have chosen prison."
E: Events theat take place in this town are unheard of by outsiders. No one knows what happens here not even when an explosion as large as a nuclear explosion occurs.
N: Not even the best of people can help. They try and try but cannot do anything about it.
S: Spells and magic is how the people of lesser Malling live. Controlling theirs and others lives with witchcraft.
G: Chastly horrors take place in this little town where everyone is in on a plan to take over the world with the help of a clueless innocent kid.
A: All of the world should have come to an end on Roodmas, the night when witches are at full power, but one boy and his determinded friend saved it.
T: Truthfully, this novel is a suspenseful thriller story that engulfs the reader from the first scene where a security guard is stabbed in a frantic attempt to escape a robbery.
E: "Everyone that tried to help ended up in trouble or dead"

Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne:
H err Liszt, is Bruno’s teacher, who would come to their house for school. Because Out With was so out of touch with any real civilization, they had a teacher who would come and teach them at their house. Bruno was not a big fan of him because he limited Bruno’s creativity.
Out with is the concentration camp, which was in reach of Bruno. Bruno didn’t know it was a concentration camp at the time. He went there multiple times because he had made his only friend, Shmeul, there. Although there were barbed-wire fences all around the camp, Bruno enjoyed talking with his new companion, and occasionally, Bruno would bring Shmuel food.
Loveable Bruno died in the concentration camp, in search of Shmuel’s father. After Shmuel’s father went “missing”, Bruno squeezed under the gate, and changed into a pair of clothes that Shmuel had provided. Bruno was in it for the adventure, but after being in the camp for a few seconds, Bruno felt the urge to leave. Being a good friend, Bruno decided to stay with Shmuel to search for Shmuel’s father. Before he had finished the search, the soldiers ordered a march. Bruno and Shmuel were quickly placed in the middle of all of the chaos. When they went into the gas chamber, but Bruno had assumed that they were just getting out of the rain. Before he knew it, they both died a sad death.
Over worked, doesn’t even cover what the Prisoners had to go through. For example, Pavel was forced into peeling potatoes, instead of being a doctor, which he was before he was taken to the camp. Shmeul was parted from his family, and to add to that, he wasn’t feed enough.
Carefully, Pavel tried to pour wine for Lieutenant Kotler. He missed the wine glass and accidently spilled it unto the lap of the Lieutenant. “What happened then was both unexpected and extremely unpleasant. Lieutenant Koler grew very angry with Pavel and no one- not Bruno, Not Gretel, not mother and not even Father – stepped in to stop him doing what he did next, even though none of them could watch, even though it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale (148)”. The lieutenant beat Pavel, which is heartbreaking because Pavel’s character is exceptionally innocent. Later that night, Bruno realized what a horrible man the Lieutenant was, but most of all, he noticed the fact that his father didn’t stop it from happening.
Ardent feelings were portrayed in this novel. For Bruno, it was the feeling of friendship. For his father, it was the feeling of defeat. For his mother, it was the feeling of remorse, for the people who were being tortured only minutes away. Last, Shmeul was feeling lonely and disconnected from the real world.
Unfortunate Shmuel was in the camp, staving for months. The only thing that he had left was his family, who all disappeared though out time. If it weren’t for Bruno, Shmeul wouldn’t even have anything to look forward to. Thanks to Bruno, Shmuel was provided with food and friendship.
Smells of the dead bodies went into the air. Bruno’s mother didn’t realize what the smell was until Lieutenant Koler accidently informed her. This is the beginning of the rocky relationship between Bruno’s parents. A bit later, She decides that it would be best if her and her children were to move away from the camp. Although, before that could happen, it was too late for Bruno, because before they left, he was gassed.
Time was of the essence to Bruno. When he first moved to Out With, he was counting the days until he was able to go home. As time passed, Bruno became less focused on counting time and enjoyed his new life there. It also played a big part in Shmuel’s life as well. He only had weeks before he was to die from one thing to another.
lauren sands- setting
Setting:
Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne:
Bruno resided in the time of the Holocaust. His house was placed a few miles away from the camp, which was within Bruno’s reach. It happened to be a special place for Bruno because without it, he wouldn’t have a friend. Shmuel, his friend, was the same age as he and would often times entertain Bruno. Him and Shmuel didn’t have to physically play. Instead, they would sit and talk. Resulting from this, Bruno built a strong relationship with Shmuel. The camp was a horrid place, where they would torture the lives of the Jewish people, by starving them and over working them. When Bruno first moved into his new home, his room had a small window in it, through which he could catch a glimpse of a “farm”. It wasn’t a farm, but a concentration camp. Innocent Bruno had just assumed it was a farm, until later he discovered that it wasn’t a farm at all. From Bruno’s window you could see a “huge wire fence that ran along the length of the house and turned in at the top, extending further along in either direction, further than (anyone) could possibly see. The fence was very high, higher even than the house they were standing in, and there were huge wooden posts, like telegraph poles, dotted along it, holding it up. At the top of the fence enormous bales of barbed wire were tangled in spirals (32)”. This fence separated the Bruno’s life with Shmuel’s. It hurt Shmuel to live there because his relatives were being killed. He was uninformed of what was happening. The scenery is vital to the story because without it, Bruno would not die in the end and Shmuel would never have a friend. I would hate to be in this setting because I would be traumatized, hungry, tired, and mainly dehumanized, like Shmuel was. Although, if the story were to be in another time, Bruno might have found out all about the camps and Shmuel might have perished.
lauren sands- character sketch
Character sketch-
Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne:
In the beginning, my intuition of Bruno was that he was a spoiled little boy. He was moving out of Berlin with his family to go to a place called “Out With”, which was their residence near the concentration camp. As the house in Berlin is described, you become aware of their wealth. To add to that, their family had to move up to Out With, meaning that Bruno’s father must have played a very critical position in the camp. Bruno reminds me of my younger cousin, because he is naive of what is happening in the holocaust. Bruno didn’t know a lot about Jews or even that he lived next to a camp. My cousin is also a big adventurer, like Bruno. Although Bruno was clearly informed that he shouldn’t explore, it was his nature and he couldn’t contain himself. It was these explorations that lead him to the camp. Judging Bruno from his elegant clothing, you can see that Bruno had to dress to impress. Many important soldiers would come to his house, including “the Fury”. Although, judging that the garment was too small, states that his life wasn’t always about looking fancy for others. From Bruno’s behavior, and the way his family treats him, you can tell that Bruno is like any other young boy; He loves to play and is very curious. He could remember the times at his old house and he recalled when he “used to enjoy exploring. And that was in Berlin, where (he) knew everywhere and could find anything (he) wanted with a blindfold on. (He has) never done any exploring here. Perhaps its time (he should) start (99)”. He starts to explore outside of his household area. Soon after he leaves his home, he walks right into the face of death. The sad thing is that Bruno never did realize what he was doing, or exactly why Shmuel, his companion from the camp, always looked so drowsy and famished. It was his curiosity that set him up to die.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
Very close to the beginning of the story the reader finds out that Christopher died. “I hate to tell you this, mister, buy your friend is dead. Frozen to death up on the tundra” (60). As I read while Christopher explained his adventure I kept thinking about is death. This took away the thrill of his adventure. At times I got frustrated so I could save Chris so he didn’t have to die.

Character Sketch:
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
My first impression of Christopher Johnson McCandless is that he is a rebel. He seems to do things in his own way. McMandless believed, “ he answered to statutes of a higher order-that as a latter-day adherent of Henry David Thoreau, he took as gospel the essay ‘ On the Duty of Civil Disobedience’ and thus considered it his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state” (28). He didn’t fallow the law. He had to abandon his car because he went into the area with a high flood warning

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
“An hour later violent gusts started blowing down from the desert, and the wind and title rips conspired to carry him out to sea” (36). Krakauer chose these words to express his idea that he is in a battle with nature. The words conspired means that nature is planning against him. This relates to the entire book in which Christopher is trying to prove that he is stronger than nature.
Travel team by Mike lupica
6. When danny gets in a fight with a kid name teddy it really makes me angry because teddy starts bad mouthing dannys father. I dont like it when you talk about someones parents. "Your dad? teddy said. sponser a team? With what his bar tips.?" Dannys father spends a ton of time at the bar watching games and drinking. Dannys father use to play basketball and was about to go pro until he got into a crash that change him as a person. By teddy saying this it made danny hurt and mad inside. Both boys get into a fight. Danny gets in major trouble with his mother and gets grounded for a week. A whole week of no TV,video games, or computer.
11. this book takes place in the 20th century, in a little town known has middle town. In the book they mention the city is a small town, also the clothing worn in the book are casual colthing worn today, and finally you really couldnt tell the seasons. Travel basketball is played all around from my experience. I would love to be in this situation because i feel that danny is the underdog and i love being the underdog in situations because then as danny i could prove to everyone that i should have made the travel team. If this took place along time ago i dont think any thing would really have been different. Maybe the clothing and shoes might have look different but no drastic change. He parked near the corner of clevand and earl.... in this stupid small small- minded town."

Top 10 List:
1. My favorite quote is when he writes on the bus, “Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, ‘Cause “The west is the best.” And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual revolution. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the great white north. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become Lost in the Wild.
Alexander Supertramp
May 1992
2. My second favorite scene in the book is when he fools his parents into thinking he’s going to college, but he takes his car, burns all his money and ID, and becomes a hitchhiker. I like this scene because this is when he becomes actually free from civilization.
3. The most irritating/sad thing in the book is that it was juts 2 or 3 weeks when people found him dead in the abandoned bus. If he had eaten berries or caught one animal or if he survived somehow, he would have been rescued and his life would have been saved.
4. I loved how he met people when he was on his way to Alaska; he made new friends every stop and was a very likeable guy. I believe people liked him for his sharp mind and unique personality and desire to be a hitchhiker. His deceiving looks attracted only the real Samaritans to help him.
5. Something that stunned me was that he hated his parents so much. They never abused him but were just simply trying to be normal parents like any other couple. His personality was just too stubborn to get along with them. I felt sad for his parents when he ran away and didn’t even tell them where he was going, what he was doing, etc. His parents loved him very much and couldn’t believe it.
6. This brings us to his relationship with his sister. Since he didn’t like his parents, his sister was the closest to him in his family. He always wrote her letters and they kept in touch most of the time when he was gone. I suspect that the sister knew he was going to break away, the real question was when he was going to break away.
7. One of the many characteristics I loved about Chris McCandless that kind of relates to me is he doesn’t like to have new things when the old ones work perfectly fine. For example, for graduation his parents got him a new car and he was very upset. Because, when his old car worked perfectly fine and he loved it, he didn’t want a new one. I feel the same way…why spend the money when you don’t need anything new?
8. Another trait I loved about him was that he loved the wilderness. He was extremely smart for his age, reading all kinds of deep books and understanding the symbolism of the books about nature. He didn’t care about the outside world or what anyone else said, he was on a mission. Dying is what it took to realize happiness only comes from human relations instead of being a loner, even how great nature is won’t bring you eternal happiness.
9. I did not like in the book how the author switched stories when you were right in the middle of another. It was quite annoying to the point where you want to skip the pages until you get to Chris’s story.
10. Last, I absolutely loved the movie they made. When it showed his death, it symbolized him going into heaven in a way, it was really neat. In the book, I loved seeing all the real pictures of Chris McCandless/Alex Supertramp leaning against the bus, or any other pictures. It gave me an idea what he was going through. I loved Into the Wild overall.

Chris McCandless/Alex Supertramp
Character sketch: What was your first impression of a character?Well, I saw the movie before the book so I kind of knew what kind of guy Chris McCandless was but my impression of him was that he was a young guy, didn’t like his parents, and just wanted to be free from everyone. He wanted to go to Alaska to escape civilization and he knew what he wanted so he followed through with it. He doesn’t remind me of anyone I know because everyone I know is very social and would never leave and hitch hike. But, I think the closest to his characteristics is myself. I can be social but sometimes I just want to get away. Although, I think I like the IDEA of going out on my own and living in the wilderness (because I love camping) a lot better then I would actually like being out there by myself. I do often think how awesome it would be to meet new people along the way and live off the land. When you look at Chris McCandless, you see a sharp guy whose got his head on right. He looks well rounded and clean. But, when you look at Alex Supertramp, you see someone entirely different. His grown out hair and scraggly beard and bad hygiene gives you the impression he doesn’t take care of himself and he’s some homeless creepy guy. He’s very skinny because he had no food. You can tell he’s a mountain guy because of his big hiking pack on his shoulders. When you meet Chris, like before, you see a well rounded, smart young man who is probably getting a good education. But then again, when you see Alex, he still acts as a very intelligent person, but he is a bit mysterious because of his low profile background and the mystery why he’s there? Why he won’t tell his parents where he is? Other characters have thought the same exact thing as I just stated but they also said he was very stubborn and very confident, almost too much. I picked two quotes. The first is for Chris McCandless, after learned his lesson, I think this quote suits him well…”I have lived through much and now I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it don’t to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one’s neighbor—such is my idea of happiness. And then, on top of all that, you for a mate, and children, perhaps—what more can the heart of a man desire?” He wrote this while stranded on his bus during some of his last days. I would of picked two years he walks the earth. No phone…and so on but I used that quote in my acrostic so I picked the next best two. The two quotes I picked for the unexperienced Alex Supertramp are these: “Lara walked along the tracks following a path worn by pilgrims and then turned into the fields. Here she stopped and, closing her eyes, took a deep breath of the flower-scented air of the broad expanse around her. It was dearer to her than her kin, better than a lover, wiser than a book. For a moment she rediscovered the purpose of her life. She was here on earth to grasp the meaning of its wild enchantment and to call each thing by its right name, or, if this were not within her power, to givebirth out of love for life to successors who would do it in her place.” He identified this paragraph while reading this book and wrote nature/purity in the margins. “Oh, how one wishes sometimes to escape from the meaningless dullness of human eloquence, from all those sublime phrases, to take refuge in nature, apparently so inarticulate, or in the wordlessness of long, grinding labor, of sound sleep, of true music, or of a human understanding rendered speechless by emotion!” this was also one of his favorites and he specifically underlined refuge in nature. This describes his personality.

SPOILER ALERT J
Interestingly compelling to all kinds of people who want to escape from their confusing, annoying, and overwhelming society or community. It’s hard to put down because of Chris McCandless’s unique way of thinking and acting. The nature of the wilderness attracts you to explore the forest with Alex Supertramp and experience all his emotions and physical activities.
Naturally a tragic story of the boy who thought he could do anything with his well-developed skills but only to find out this was not possible. This is why only his remains were found in an old, abandoned bus in the middle of Alaska. His family he had a grudge against cared about him greatly, but he didn’t care what they thought, he just wanted to escape reality.
Tremendously strange character in the book, but you either develop a strong liking for his charisma or a deep down desire to question his actions and his personality. You get the feeling he had some problems but you want to imitate his actions at the same time. Your mind is split between everything about him, his characteristics, his actions, the way he talks, his appearance, his stories, and his desires.
Often intriguing, but there were times where the author talked about other people’s experiences with his mountains, including his own, that you would rather not hear but rather get on with the story. Overall, the story was well-told and it’s a story you won’t forget. I recommend to everyone to read this story, for it gives you a desire to experience the one of the greater things in life, nature.
Towering feelings of exhilaration, inspiration, and exaltation. This book shares with you the confused but logical thoughts that Chris McCandless once had. When he goes to Alaska to survive in the wilderness, your not left behind, the description and elaboration of the facts in the book makes it feel like your in his shoes.
He, Alex Supertramp, gave money to the starving, but he died later from starvation. This arouses suspicion of suspecting his own death. Because what are the chances he gives all that he has to a charity for starving people and then he dies of starvation himself.
Effective on everyone who read the book. Into the Wild makes you have second thoughts about your life situation. Like if you need to be making the best of your life and taking risks, instead of worrying about getting into a good college. Sadly, society has taken me over because all I can worry about is getting into a good college, being successful, getting a job with a good salary. The book made me realize I need to kick back and enjoy being a kid because I’m only in 8th grade.
Wilderness is the key of the story, Chris wanted to be alone in his own world. Most people like the idea of going and living off land but hate it once they got out there. Chris was different, he knew the basics of living. He knew the essentials for healthy life.
Initially a very popular book, well liked by the readers, and also documented into a movie. The movie is absolutely fantastic, I cannot decide wich I like better, the movie or the book. But I know they represent the hardships of Chris McCandless and Alex Supertramp. They both have the same message too, that happiness only comes from human relaions, which I believe in strongly.
Life or Death? No one knows which is better. Most people think life but this is only because life is the only thing they’ve experienced. Chris McCandless didn’t know what was better, he just decided to live life to the fullest instead of waiting around to see what death looked like. He hitchhiked all the way to Alaska. He had no money, no food, he was all on his own.
Defiance of society was his motto. “Two years he walks the earth. August Acrostic- The Secret Life of Bees
*SPOILER ALERT*
Always there for her loved ones, August has a caring heart and has open arms for anyone that needs her. She gives great advice and knows how to handle any situation she faces. August is a loving figure that will always strive to do what is right.
Under immense pressure, August still possesses grace in the hardest times. When May dies, August mourns quietly and doesn't disturb or sadden others with the gloominess that she feels. She understands that it isn’t right to bring others down with you.
Gentle and caring, August is like the motherly figure Lily never had. August accepts Lily even though she is a white girl and a perfect stranger. August lets Lily tell her lies, even when she knows what Lily is saying to her isn’t true. August constantly tries to guide Lily in the right direction, but in a way that does not embarrass Lily. She nurtures Lily like a loving mother would.
Uplifting towards everyone, August makes people feel comfortable no matter what. Unlike June who wasn’t welcoming to Lily at first, August reaches out a hand and includes Lily like she is part of the family. She takes things as they come, and doesn’t hesitate to be kind or thoughtful.
Sophisticated and mature, August knows what life is really about. She is content with how she lives her life and isn’t concerned about what others might think about her. Lily could learn from her wise ways and realize that “some things don’t matter that much, Lily. Like the color of a house. How big is that in the overall scheme of life? But lifting a person’s heart- now, that matters” (147).
The reason August is so special is because she lives life being the best person that she can. She is always thoughtful, and considers other people’s needs before her own. She treats every person she meets with respect and kindness. She doesn’t sail through life without a care. She thinks about how to act and to live life as a better person. August is like a motherly figure to Lily, but she also acts like a Christ figure to everyone else around her.
